The Newport Canvassing Authority is charged with conducting all elections in the City of Newport. The Authority is comprised of three bi-partisan members appointed by the City Council. The current Authority members are David F. Roderick, Jr.; Chairman; Robert J. Perrello and Richard E. O’Neill, Clerk. The current City Council members were elected on November 4, 2008 and sworn into office on January 2, 2009. The current City Council is led by Mayor Jeanne-Marie Napolitano. Under the direction of the State Board of Elections, and in cooperation with the Secretary of State, the Authority is involved in all phases of the electoral process, from voter registration to tallying the votes after the polls close on election day. There are approximately 13,074 registered voters in the City of Newport. In November, 2002 the electors voted that there should be four councilors-at-large and three ward councilors. The next General Election will be November 2, 2010. If a primary is necessary it will be held on September 14, 2010. Candidate declaration forms will be available at the Canvassing Office on June 28, 29, 30, 2010. It is the goal of the Authority to ensure the will of the majority of the City's citizens is accurately voiced in each Municipal, State and General Election; and to serve the City Council and the citizens of Newport by registering as many new voters as possible and encourage all citizens to vote.
