The mission of Special Hazards is to respond with specialized training and equipment in order to successfully mitigate hazardous incidents that fall outside the arena of traditional fire fighting and emergency medical services. Rescue responses in this area include, but are not limited to: Water, Ice, Rope/High Angle, Confined Space, Structural Collapse, Trench, Hazardous Materials, Terrorism, and Shipboard Fire Fighting. |
| "Special Hazards" informally began in 1996 when two NFD personnel attended a Technical Rescue "Train the Trainer" course at the Barnstable Fire Training Academy on Cape Cod. In 1999, Chief Marx officially signed the Special Hazards group into existence. Special Hazards continues to evolve in order to meet the broad demands of non-traditional incident response. The program now receives funding through the budgetary process and generous private donations. Special Hazards training is available to all NFD personnel willing to be trained in any one or more of the specific disciplines. |
